This month we re-introduce our "Members' Corner" series of Events, Members' Corners are lectures by our members on something or somewhere that a particular member is passionate about, it can be about some particular aspect of culture or a country where they have lived in or visited. Our first speaker in Bindhya Preisner on Bhutan
Until 1962 Bhutan was one of the most isolated counties in the world, a tiny nation wedged in the Himalayas between India and China. Bhutan has been in the international spotlight for its strong commitment to preserving its culture, severely limiting tourism, for one thing, and also for its' unique approach to focusing on people's gross national happiness.
"People always ask me, how can you possibly have a nation of happy people?” But this is missing the point. GNH is an aspiration, a set of guiding principles through which the country is navigating its’ path towards a sustainable and equitable society.
Bindhya will share her personal views and assessment of the origin of the concept of Gross national happiness, and how it has shaped the country’s development.
Bindhya Priesner is from Bhutan, married to an Austrian with two children. She has a Masters degree in Health Systems Management and worked for several years as development worker in Danish International Development Assistance Programme, UNICEF and in recent years as freelance consultant. She accompanies her children and husband who works for UNDP and has lived in several countries, Nepal, Bosnia i Herzegovina, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan and now Malaysia.
