Kelantan, the north-eastern Malaysian state is known for its rich cultural heritage. It has been closely linked to the 15th Century Pattani kingdom and has centuries of royal history, which has shaped its traditions, arts and crafts.

This morning we will be hearing of the Kelantanese craft of silver.

Kelantanese silver is known for its intricate designs where Malay artisans work on silver derived from ingots and bars. The secret behind the silverware’s beauty is the patience and skill of the silversmiths, who carefully hand-craft every piece of silver into a work of art.

Kelantanese silversmiths are renowned for their superior workmanship. Silversmiths use two kinds of techniques - filigree and repousse. The patterns are based on Malay flora and fauna, and can reflect the motifs on Malay textiles like songket.

Craftsmen are also renowned for their Keris making skills especially the handle and the sheath!

There are very few traditional silversmiths in the society today. Commissions from the royal courts, weddings and keris connoisseurs sustain them.

Join us this morning as Suriyani Senja Alias, the founder of Senijari a local artisanal luxury brand, that aims to revive Malaysian heritage through modern design, shares her knowledge of this intricate craft with us.
